What Is Virtual Reality?
Virtual reality is a computer-generated, three-dimensional environment that users can explore and interact with. While the technology behind VR is impressive, it’s ultimately the brain that completes the illusion. Our brains constantly combine sensory inputs to form a coherent picture of reality. When VR delivers convincing visual and auditory cues, the brain accepts them as genuine.
That’s why people often react physically to virtual experiences. You might feel vertigo while standing on a virtual cliff or get dizzy when moving in VR while your body remains still. This phenomenon, called sensory conflict, is one of the biggest challenges in VR design.

In manufacturing and engineering, it enables virtual prototyping and simulation, helping teams test designs before building them.

The tourism industry is also experimenting with virtual tours of heritage sites like the Taj Mahal or Hampi, allowing people to experience India’s cultural treasures from anywhere in the world.

VR technology is evolving rapidly. New headsets are becoming lighter, more affordable, and wireless, while offering higher resolution and wider fields of view. Researchers are also developing eye-tracking, facial recognition, and haptic suits that simulate touch across the body.
In the near future, VR is expected to merge with augmented reality (AR) – which overlays digital elements onto the real world – to form mixed reality (MR). This convergence could transform how we work, learn, and communicate, from remote collaboration to virtual classrooms.
