Factors such as age, gender, and genetics play a major role in how your body converts energy – and therefore how easy or difficult it is to lose weight or maintain it. Here’s an overview of what influences your fat burning and how you can work with – not against – your body’s biology.

What is fat burning, really?

Fat burning is the process by which your body converts stored fat into energy. It happens all the time – both when you’re resting and when you’re active. The body uses both fat and carbohydrates as fuel, and the balance between them depends on the intensity of your activity. At low to moderate intensity, the body primarily uses fat, while at higher intensity it relies more on carbohydrates.

However, how efficiently your body burns fat varies from person to person. This is due to both biological and lifestyle factors.

Age: When metabolism slows down over time

Many people notice that maintaining their weight becomes harder with age – and that’s not just a myth. From around the age of 30, the body’s basal metabolic rate gradually declines. This happens mainly because muscle mass tends to decrease while fat mass increases.

Muscles require more energy than fat, even at rest, so when muscle mass drops, overall energy expenditure also falls. Hormonal changes – such as lower testosterone in men and reduced estrogen in women – can further influence how the body stores and uses fat.

The good news is that you can counteract much of this age-related slowdown through strength training and regular physical activity. These help preserve muscle mass and keep your metabolism active.

Gender: Differences in hormones and body composition

Men and women have different biological conditions for fat burning. Men generally have more muscle mass and higher testosterone levels, which contribute to a faster metabolism. Women, on the other hand, naturally have a higher percentage of body fat – partly because estrogen promotes fat storage, especially around the hips and thighs.

During exercise, women often burn a higher proportion of fat compared to carbohydrates than men do, but their total energy expenditure is usually lower. This means women may lose weight more slowly, but they are often better at using fat as fuel during longer activities such as walking, yoga, or endurance training.

Genetics: The inherited blueprint

Genetics play a bigger role than many realize. Research shows that some people are genetically predisposed to have a higher resting metabolism, while others may store fat more easily. Genes also influence how your body responds to diet and exercise.

For example, some people are genetically inclined to store fat around the abdomen, while others store it more on the hips and thighs. There are also genetic variations that affect how efficiently the body uses fatty acids for energy during exercise.

Although you can’t change your genes, you can adapt your lifestyle to them. If you know you tend to have a slower metabolism, focus on strength training, a protein-rich diet, and regular movement to stimulate your body’s energy use.

Sleep, stress, and diet – the overlooked factors

Beyond age, gender, and genetics, lifestyle plays a huge role. Lack of sleep and chronic stress can disrupt hormone balance and reduce fat burning. When the body produces too much of the stress hormone cortisol, it tends to store more fat – especially around the waist.

Diet composition also matters. A diet with enough protein helps maintain muscle mass, while a moderate calorie deficit and regular meals support a stable metabolism. Extreme diets or skipping meals can have the opposite effect, causing the body to conserve energy and slow down fat burning.

In India, where traditional diets often include carbohydrate-rich foods like rice and chapati, balancing meals with adequate protein sources – such as lentils, eggs, paneer, or fish – can make a big difference. Including healthy fats from nuts, seeds, and mustard or coconut oil can also support better metabolic health.

How to support your fat burning

Even though you can’t change your age or genetics, you can influence many of the factors that control your fat burning. Here are some practical tips:

  • Exercise regularly – combine strength training and cardio to maintain muscle mass and increase energy expenditure.
  • Eat balanced meals – include enough protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates.
  • Get enough sleep – 7–9 hours per night helps regulate hormones and metabolism.
  • Manage stress – meditation, yoga, or a walk in nature can lower cortisol levels.
  • Stay consistent – fat burning is a long-term process; small, steady changes bring lasting results.

Finding your personal balance

Fat burning isn’t just about willpower – it’s a complex interaction between biology and lifestyle. By understanding how age, gender, and genetics affect your body, you can set more realistic goals and work smarter toward them. It’s not about fighting your nature, but about finding the balance that works best for you.
